Why volunteer with us?
The Haven Centre is a place where people are valued for who they are, where kindness matters, and where everyone plays a part in creating a calm, inclusive environment.
It’s about showing up, being yourself, and helping the Centre feel like it belongs to everyone.
Through simple acts of kindness and practical support – whether it’s a conversation over coffee, practical help behind the scenes, or supporting events and fundraising – our volunteers help create an environment where children and young people with multiple and complex needs, their families, and the wider community can feel at ease.
How can you help?
The Haven Café
The Haven Café
Many of our volunteers support the Haven Café, and without them we simply couldn’t offer the warm, fully accessible space that brings our community together each and every day.
As a volunteer, you might help with:
- Serving customers and taking orders
- Preparing drinks and food
- Clearing tables and keeping the space comfortable
- Chatting with visitors and helping people feel at ease
The café also encourages inclusive volunteering opportunities for people with neurodivergent needs, offering meaningful roles that help nurture confidence, skill-building and a genuine sense of belonging.
Events and one-off support
Events and one-off support
Throughout the year, we love bringing people together through events and community gatherings at the Haven Centre.
And whether big or small, lively or low-key, they’re always about connection and making people feel welcome.
During these events, volunteers can help in simple, practical ways, such as:
- Being a friendly face as people arrive
- Helping set up spaces so everything feels ready
- Supporting activities as they happen
- Keeping things ticking along behind the scenes
These roles are flexible and work well for people who want to help when they can, without committing to a regular schedule, because even lending a hand now and then plays a big part in making these moments feel relaxed, supported and shared.

As the Haven Centre continues to grow, so do the ways people can get involved. Alongside café and event volunteering, we also welcome support with a range of practical and behind-the-scenes tasks that help the Centre run smoothly day to day.
This might include:
- Admin and organisational tasks
- Skills-based help, such as communications, maintenance or creative support
- Practical or behind-the-scenes support as new spaces and activities develop
Join our volunteer team
The Haven Centre relies on the support of volunteers to help us provide a safe, welcoming and inclusive space for families across the Highlands.
From helping in the café to supporting events, administration and fundraising, volunteers are a vital part of the day-to-day life of the centre. Every hour given helps us continue the work of the Elsie Normington Foundation and allows us to support more children, young people and families with additional needs.
